The Secret of Trees: A Hidden Parenting Lesson

Suhba Club Editors

Did you know that a tree has to grow in two directions at once?

Here’s how it all works: when a seed is planted in the ground, its first job isn’t to grow upward, it’s to push roots deep into the earth. This part of the growth is challenging. The root system has to push through dirt and rocks, in darkness and resistance, to establish a foundation. Only after the roots are firmly planted does the tree begin its upward journey, breaking through the surface and reaching for the sun.

Above ground, the tree faces less resistance. It stretches towards the light, away from gravity, and flourishes. This dual growth, both upward and downward, is what makes the tree strong and fruitful.

The terms 'gravitropic’ or ‘phototropic’ describe how trees grow in opposite directions. Gravitropic means that roots grow downward, towards the pull of gravity, while phototropic means the part of the tree above the ground grows upward, toward the light. Both processes are essential for the tree’s survival.

This is a beautiful metaphor for personal growth and the challenges we face. The work we do in the ‘dark’ - those moments when we struggle, face resistance, and encounter difficulties, is what builds our foundation. Just like a tree can’t grow tall without deep roots, we can’t thrive in the light without doing the hard work in the shadows. Everyone sees the fruits of success, the outward achievements, but the real work happens in the difficult times when no one is watching.

As parents, this analogy is especially relevant. We all want our children to grow, succeed, and reach for the stars. But we must also help them understand the value of effort, persistence, and struggle. The ‘difficult’ moments, the times when things feel hard, are just as important as the achievements that come later.

It’s easy to admire the tall tree with its sweet fruit, but without strong roots, it would never stand so tall. Encourage your children to embrace challenges, dig deep when faced with difficulties and know that growth happens in both directions - downwards, through the hard work and upwards, towards the light.
