The Friend Who Never Left the Prophet ﷺ

Qudamah Ibn Emdad

Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه‎) was the greatest companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

He was the first adult man to accept Islam and later became the first Caliph of the Muslims.

He even had the honour of being buried right beside the Prophet ﷺ.

His story is full of courage and sacrifice. Let’s take a journey through the amazing life of Abu Bakr (r.a‎).

His Journey to Islam

When Abu Bakr (r.a) returned from a business trip to Yemen, his friends told him that Muhammad ﷺ had declared himself the Messenger of Allah.

Without any hesitation, Abu Bakr believed in him.

He took his shahada and became the first Muslim outside of the Prophet’s family.

This makes me wonder: Do we feel that same strong connection to Allah and His Messenger? Would we be ready to stand up for our faith like Abu Bakr (r.a) did?

Spreading the Message

After accepting Islam, Abu Bakr (r.a) didn’t stay quiet. He invited his close friends and helped guide amazing people like Uthman ibn ‘Affan, Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwām, Talha ibn ‘Ubaydullah and Abdur-Rahman ibn ‘Awf to Islam.

Sometimes I ask myself: Even though we’ve been Muslim for years, are we really doing our best to help others learn about Islam like Abu Bakr did?

The Migration

When Mecca became dangerous, the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr (r.a) secretly left for Medina.

The journey was long and risky and the Quraysh were trying to capture them.

After eight days, they reached Quba on the outskirts of Medina, where they finally found safety.

When I hear this story, I wonder: The Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr (r.a) walked through the desert for days, would we even walk ten minutes for the sake of our deen?

The Prophet’s Final Days

Abu Bakr (r.a) was there for the Prophet ﷺ during his last days.

He attended his final sermon and after the Prophet ﷺ passed away, gave a powerful khutbah reminding everyone that all Prophets die, but Allah ﷻ lives forever.

This teaches us that our role as Muslims is to continue the message. Our time will come, but our mission doesn’t stop until we return to Allah.

Becoming the First Caliph

After the Prophet’s passing, a meeting was held between the Ansar (Muslims of Medina) and the Muhajirun (Muslims who migrated from Mecca).

Abu Bakr (r.a) was chosen as the first Caliph of Islam. He led the Muslims with wisdom and strength, fighting off tribes who rebelled and keeping the ummah united.

One of his greatest contributions was ordering the compilation of the Qur’an into a single book. He chose Zayd ibn Thābit (r.a) to lead this important task and today we read from that same Qur’an.

Why Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه‎) Still Inspires Us Today

Abu Bakr (r.a) gave everything for Islam, his time, his wealth and even his safety.

He followed the Prophet ﷺ closely and became a true leader for the Muslims.

As Muslims, we should look up to him and ask ourselves: How can I be like Abu Bakr (r.a)? Can I be brave, generous and always close to Allah?

While this marks the end of Abu Bakr’s (r.a) story, it could be the beginning of yours, a journey of faith (Īmān), courage and deep love for Islam.
