Living Online: The Desert of Our Time

Suhba Club Editors

The Prophet ﷺ said

مَنْ سَكَنَ الْبَادِيَةَ جَفَا

“Whoever lives in the desert becomes harsh.”1

In the harsh isolation of the desert, Bedouins developed a toughness shaped by their isolated, unforgiving surroundings. In contrast, city dwellers, through daily social interactions, became more compassionate, refined and empathetic. The harshness of the desert life fostered a harder approach to life, whereas communal living softened hearts and nurtured mercy. This dynamic reveals how our environment profoundly influences our character, underscoring the transformative power of human connection and community in shaping more empathetic and caring individuals.

This lesson is highly relevant to modern life, where the internet has become a kind of digital “desert.” We are all together, yet alone, interacting through screens instead of in person. Online communication often lacks the empathy and warmth that face-to-face interactions naturally foster. This detachment makes it easy for people to be harsh in comment sections and forums. Without seeing another’s face, feeling their presence, or hearing their voice, we can easily forget the humanity behind the screen, leading to colder, more impersonal exchanges.

Lessons for Us and Our Children

  • Human Interaction Cultivates Compassion: Living in a community shapes character, and face-to-face interactions foster empathy. It’s vital for children to appreciate real-world relationships, which nurture kindness and softens the heart.

  • The Internet Can Breed Isolation: While the internet connects us globally, it can also create isolation. Children should understand the potential harshness of online communication and remember the humanity behind the screen.

  • Practice Kindness in All Spaces: Whether online or offline, kindness should guide our actions. Teaching children to bring the same empathy from real-life interactions into their online behavior is crucial for reducing negativity.

In an era where our children spend more time online than we ever did, it is essential to instil in them the principles of compassion and empathy in their digital interactions, just as we do with in-person relationships. By equipping them with these values, we can foster a more understanding and kind online community, ensuring that their digital experiences are as enriching and supportive as those in their everyday lives.
